Welcome to my Crib! (DFM Millinery Studio)

Lots of people have been asking me about my studio space – so I decided what better way to explain it than to write a post about it and show you a few snaps of the dfm millinery studio and a sneak preview at the next collection!

At the moment I am currently creating my new collection for 2017 so there are lots of funky fabrics, beads and feathers lying around the studio. And… half-finished hats (but not for long), I usually make 5-6 hats at a time – I find I work better this way and it speeds up the process for me.

The colours of the universe are my inspiration for this collection….as seen below…

It’s myriad of effervescent colours,  its beauty and mystery give me something to work off. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a splash of colour, bright colours in general, so it made sense for me to hone in on this for the new collection.

My last S/S collection was rainbow inspired and the colours were a bit brighter, more primal – whereas in this collection the colours are slightly more subdued, deeper but still have a sparkle to them. Literally some of the fabric actually sparkles! Everyone needs a bit of sparkle in their life, don’t they?!

I’ve noticed how big the pom pom woolly hat trend has been over the past few years so I thought to myself why not try to bring the pom poms to the formal hats too. I think they look pretty cool if you’re looking for something different especially for racing season! I’ll also be adding a few funky pom pom headbands in their too – perfect for festival season – I’m thinking EP 2017!

This year I have decided to create one on-going collection instead of dividing them into S/S and A/W – so expect lots of new pieces to be added to the collection online and stockists throughout the year.

I am also working on a small bridal collection – just to give brides a feel of what I can do. Creating a bridal piece is usually something the bride and myself would create together with their ideas and dress as the inspiration. It’s always nice to have some diverse, imaginative pieces to show them, to get the creative process flowing. I have also recently ventured into veils! But maybe that is enough of my ideas for now.

Got to get back to work.

PS – My little helper Lenny the Cavachon can be seen regularly in my studio giving a helping paw…he especially likes to make (okay play with) pom poms, curl (eat) feathers and pick (pull) fabrics out of boxes for me to choose from!
